Besides the first trailer that was released during the past Super Bowl broadcast teasing the return of Sir Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, the latest TV spots for the Doctor Strange sequel have seemingly confirmed a connection to Disney Plus’ What If…? series, among other possible tie-ins and surprise appearances. Still, Marvel Studios is doing its best to keep fans from being robbed of a certain element of surprise, with the studio taking the war against spoilers right to social media territory.

Nevertheless, at the red carpet premiere for the film this past Monday, Feige conceded there’s been too much in the trailers and instead invited fans to go see Doctor Strange 2 in theaters. Before the premiere, during press availability, Feige commented on the problem Marvel Studios faces when it comes to preventing leaks. “The unfortunate truth is you don’t [ keep it all under wraps], and therefore you need to make sure that the experience itself works regardless of what has been spoiled or not,” Feige said. “We still do as good of a job as we can. I think a lot of people are getting good at not spreading it. Somebody steals something, don’t spread it around because it just potentially lessens the experience.”
What seems to excite Feige the most is the possibility of finally working with Multiverse stories from the comics. At the Doctor Strange 2 premiere, he noted how Loki is the show that sparked this new narrative and enabled Spider-Man: No Way Home’s entire story. The Marvel Studios chief defined Doctor Strange 2 as a sequel to so much of what’s been done since Endgame, and early reviews for Doctor Strange 2 seem mostly positive even if not quite up to the standard of the recent Spider-Man flick.
In other interviews, Feige has also mentioned Doctor Strange 2 will do a lot for WandaVision fans, although the film’s main writer had made clear that his script can stand on his own while being able to intertwine itself with the rest of the MCU. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ runtime is just over two hours long, which might not be enough to pack in as many surprises as No Way Home. However, even the movie’s soundtrack suggests there’s still a lot to uncover.
This week will prove to be a particularly busy one for Marvel Studios, as not only is Doctor Strange premiering worldwide on May 6, but Moon Knight is also wrapping up its six-episode run on Disney Plus. Regardless of that, considering Moon Knight’s independence, it seems unlikely any of the hero’s personalities are losing sleep over what goes on in the MCU.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
