And now, KFC China has gone ahead and done something similar, only to a greater degree. Instead of teasing a new phone, the fast-food chain decided to tease a brand new electric car, almost as if to tell McDonald’s that it was thinking too small by baiting a 5G device.

Just like McDonald’s, however, the car was a ruse. What KFC actually ended up unveiling was a brand new type of chicken nuggets.

For those confused: In McDonald’s’ case, it played off of Chinese words to introduce its chicken. In KFC’s, it played off of the idea of an electric car itself.

Its new line of nuggets are plant-based and vegan, and thus don’t go the traditional route of being made out of meat. Electric cars follow a similar concept, as they use renewable energy sources like plant-based biofuels instead of gas.

In other words, both McDonald’s and KFC launched absurd marketing campaigns recently. But while absurd, both admittedly did their job at garnering attention. They’re also pretty funny, so it’ll be interesting to see if another fast-food purveyor joins in.
